Inter-Community Hospital Celebrates 100 Years
The 100-year history of Inter-Community Hospital reflects the deep ties between the hospital and the community. The changes in each era of the hospital’s history exemplify the hospital’s commitment to care for our community members and provide services that meet the changing needs of our community.
Covina Hospital
Mary and Melisse Wittler were two sisters who founded the hospital, then known as Covina Hospital, near downtown Covina in 1922. Within 5 years, Covina Hospital grew from a 7-bedroom home to a 50-bed hospital.
Inter-Community Hospital
When the Wittler sisters sold the hospital in 1947 to 11 communities, the hospital’s name was changed to Inter-Community Hospital to reflect the community ownership.
In the same year, Inter-Community Hospital expanded its capacity and added a laboratory, x-ray capabilities, and a pharmacy to be able to provide timelier services to patients.
The hospital continued expanding its capacity throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s to meet the growing need for services in the community. In 1965, the Parkside West Mental Health Unit was added to the hospital to help mental health patients in the community.
Inter-Community Medical Center
On its 60th anniversary, the hospital was renamed to Inter-Community Medical Center.
This era saw the opening of a new front entrance, the construction of the Surgery Pavilion and the first open-heart surgery.
Citrus Valley Medical Center Inter-Community Campus
In 1996, Inter-Community Hospital merged with Queen of the Valley Hospital and was renamed to Citrus Valley Medical Center Inter-Community Campus
During this period, the hospital advanced heart care, built an expanded emergency room, and acquired the latest technology to bring the best resources and care to our community.
Emanate Health Inter-Community Hospital
On May 19, 2019, Citrus Valley Health Partners rebranded to Emanate Health, and the hospital became known as Emanate Health Inter-Community Hospital.
