Heart surgery is any surgery done on the heart muscle, valves, arteries, aorta and other large arteries connected to the heart.
Coronary artery bypass grafting and valve surgery are two open heart surgeries we perform at our Heart Care Center.
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
The coronary arteries supply the heart with oxygen and nutrients to stay healthy. If there is buildup of plaque or a clot formed in the arteries, the heart muscle is in danger. With a Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery, a healthy vein or artery is used to help bypass the narrowed or blocked artery. This new pathway redirects the blood supply restoring oxygen and nutrients to the heart.
Valve surgery
Heart valve surgery is a procedure that treats heart valve disease. The heart has four valves: mitral valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve, and aortic valve. The purpose of these valves is to prevent blood from going backwards as it pumps through the different chambers of the heart. Each valve has flaps. These flaps open and close once during each heartbeat, unless there is a problem. Flaps that don’t open and close properly will disrupt blood flow through the heart and body.
Valves can be replaced or repaired. Talk to your doctor on what type of valve surgery you may need.
